How to use snap layouts in Windows 11

The snap layout is one of Windows 11 that is just plain useful, even if it isn’t very revolutionary. Instead of Windows 10’s drag-and-drop snap assist feature, snap layouts allow you to organize your apps neatly and instantly on your desktop. It makes it much easier to see all of them at once and much easier to use them. In any case, it’s an improvement over alternating between apps with Alt-Tab. The following are the steps to set it up:

• You can do this by hovering the cursor over the maximize icon in the upper right corner of an app or by pressing Win-Z. There are four different grid layouts you can choose from (or six if your monitor is large). A different configuration will apply to each layout.

• Select a layout and hover over the zone you’d like it to be in to see your active app. Click on the zone to make it active. The app will snap to the position you selected when you do so.

• Additionally, you may see thumbnails of other apps if other apps were open in another zone. By Alt-Tabbing, you can choose the zone each open app should be. In addition, if the app is in the zone you desire, you can click on it.

It is sometimes possible for apps to overlap while you’re rearranging them. If you are confused, use the Alt-Tab key to locate apps quickly.

In the taskbar, you will also see your snap layout. You will see a thumbnail for both the app and the layout group you are hovering over when you go to the taskbar and click on the icon for one of the apps in your layout.

Is your app not performing as it should? You can maximize it by clicking on the maximize icon. The app will automatically return to its previous configuration if you click on it again.

LAYOUT SETTINGS ARE ADJUSTABLE

Go to “Settings” > “System” > “Multitasking” to adjust the snap layouts. You have a variety of options that you can enable or disable. When you hover over the maximize icon or the app icon in the taskbar, you can choose not to see the snap layout. As soon as one window is resized manually, the others will automatically resize. If you prefer to turn off this feature completely, you can do so.

LEARN HOW TO USE IT

You may have a little trouble at first learning how to snap layouts work, especially when deciding where apps should go. However, after you have snap layouts set up, you may find they make it easier to work on a document or watch a video while monitoring your Twitter or Slack accounts. However, you should only try this if you have a small display. If you have more than two open apps simultaneously, it can get a bit crowded, but if you have a larger display, I will try that instead.
